  • Welcome back to The FemFounder Podcast! I’m Kristin Marquet, your host, bringing you insights tailored specifically for female founders. With over 17 years of experience in PR and branding through FemFounder and Marquet Media, I’ve perfected the art of securing media coverage for brands of all sizes. Today, we’re diving into actionable strategies for crafting the perfect pitch to get your business noticed in the media.

Hello and thank you for tuning into today’s episode. I’ll walk you through exact steps to successfully pitch journalists and secure the media attention your brand deserves—without hiring a publicist. These tips will help you attract the right coverage and increase your visibility, whether you’re just starting out or refining your approach.

Building relationships with journalists is key. Media outreach isn’t about sending as many press releases as possible—it’s about quality over quantity. Start by researching who covers your industry. If you’re in wellness, fashion, or tech, identify reporters who focus on those topics. Follow them on social media, engage with their content, and stay updated on their work. Establishing a genuine connection makes it more likely they’ll take notice when you pitch.

Now, let’s discuss crafting your pitch. Journalists receive hundreds of emails daily, so you need to make yours stand out. Start with a compelling subject line—clear and specific to grab attention. Personalize your pitch by referencing the journalist’s work and explaining why your story matters to their readers. Focus on the story: highlight your startup’s mission, challenges, and why it’s relevant. Keep it concise—make it short, sweet, and easy to scan, using bullet points if necessary. Include relevant press materials, such as a media kit with company background, key bios, product details, press coverage links, and high-quality photos.

After sending your pitch, follow up after about a week. Keep your follow-up short and polite, saying something like, “Just following up on my pitch from last week regarding [topic]. I’d love to hear if you’re interested in covering our story.” Persistence is important, but relationship-building takes time. If you don’t get a response, don’t be discouraged—continue engaging with their work and pitch relevant stories when the time is right.

Social proof can also enhance your pitch. Adding a testimonial or endorsement from a happy customer, influencer, or industry leader adds credibility and makes your pitch more appealing. Consider offering something exclusive—like early access to a product launch or behind-the-scenes content—to give journalists a unique angle and increase the attractiveness of your story.

Now that you know the basics—researching journalists, personalizing your pitch, telling a compelling story, following up strategically, and using social proof—you’re ready to pitch! It takes time to build relationships and secure media coverage, so remain professional, persistent, and consistent with your outreach.
